This blog will attempt to document the progress as we tackle an allotment from scratch which has been totally neglected, 5 feet deep in thick brambles with much rubbish underneath. We are using recommended heavy hand tools which we have not used before and will be commenting on their effectiveness as we go. Finally we are trying to complete this without wrecking my bad back which has a history of dodgyness after a bout of disc prolapse!

A little closer
Another good session today and I am nearly up to the bonfire...
Excellent progress, nice to read post, as opposed to the usual at the moment (i.e. chitting, early sowing, polytunnel temperatures etc). Your soil certainly looks good too, nice and dark.
Thanks Rooko, I have to say that I am really looking forward to the actual planting phase to come. I already have apple, pear and cherry trees ready to go in, plus various soft fruit bushes for the orchard area I have just finished digging. I also had a delivery of 3 types of seed potato today from Suttons and will be putting them into trays to chit so they will be going into the allotment soon too!
I started from scratch on my current allotment in 2009. Got 1 Apple, Plum & Pear trees planted 2 years ago & 1 Cherry tree last year. Had oodles of fruit last year from the soft fruit bushes with help from plenty of sunshine.
