This blog will attempt to document the progress as we tackle an allotment from scratch which has been totally neglected, 5 feet deep in thick brambles with much rubbish underneath. We are using recommended heavy hand tools which we have not used before and will be commenting on their effectiveness as we go. Finally we are trying to complete this without wrecking my bad back which has a history of dodgyness after a bout of disc prolapse!

Mr Foxy Came
Overnight, the lovely new plot I prepared for winter leeks had obviously hosted a fox rave. It was covered in fox paw prints and little holes. So rake it over, set the leeks then hoops and nets. Then on to the next plot.
I've never tried planting leaks this late. Will be interested to see how yours get on.
What type of netting do you use? I'm looking for something which will do a proper job of protecting brassica from cabbage white butterflies. This year they've still managed to get through quite small gauge netting that is supposed to stop them.
Hi David, I bought mine from gardening naturally, http://www.gardening-naturally.com It's quite strong. However I also lost a lot of brassicas to caterpillars. I don't know whether they got through the netting which is quite small, around 10mm mesh I guess or whether they managed to get under the edges. All my neighbours allotments suffered the same problem. The only guy to escape was using a very dense heavy green netting with mesh around 1mm so that might be the solution.
