Meanwhile in the garden the pumpkins in the raised beds are taking over!
The new border is settling down nicely too...
This blog will attempt to document the progress as we tackle an allotment from scratch which has been totally neglected, 5 feet deep in thick brambles with much rubbish underneath. We are using recommended heavy hand tools which we have not used before and will be commenting on their effectiveness as we go. Finally we are trying to complete this without wrecking my bad back which has a history of dodgyness after a bout of disc prolapse!
Are those Borlotti beans? They seem very early. That said ,most things seem earlier this year given the supposed late start.
ReplyDeleteYes they are Borlotti beans David, They sat doing not much for quite a while then got into gear and now we have loads, today is the first pick for the soup. We intend to allow most of them to dry on the plant then put into jars for winter use. But we have so many that today we went and bought a second hand chest freezer via gumtree and will freeze some fresh along with zillions of french beans.
DeleteIt is turning into an exceptional crop year for almost everything, the only negative is that some of the brassica stuff is running straight to seed and flower, in particular the purple sprouting broccoli which I love and which went zooming past early florets, straight into flowers and is nothing but leggy chicken feed now (luckily we have 11 chickens)
Very nice looking veggies, in and out of the plot.
