This blog will attempt to document the progress as we tackle an allotment from scratch which has been totally neglected, 5 feet deep in thick brambles with much rubbish underneath. We are using recommended heavy hand tools which we have not used before and will be commenting on their effectiveness as we go. Finally we are trying to complete this without wrecking my bad back which has a history of dodgyness after a bout of disc prolapse!

Spuds all done!
I managed to get the remaining potatoes in today in the new plot, I just hope that we don't get a repeat of last years blight as there are now loads planted. The remainder of the plot under the trees is earmarked for pumpkins....
Nice one.I like the earthing up.The azada is a great tool for this.It reminds me of Madeira! I'm going to try the same thing with my leeks this year after seeing it done in the Canaries.
Yes David the Azada makes light work of potato planting, I used our lightweight Azada to atke out a trench about 5ins deep then the large Azada to pull the earth up. I found that if I put the first row of spuds in the trench, then moved on to trenching out the next row I could toss the soil taken out into the first trench.
