1st crop

After a week away, we went down to see how things were going. During the week away, some of the potato strains had been attacked and were showing wilting, "burned" brown foliage. We decided to take up a root or two to see what was happening underground. If anyone recognises this we would be keen to hear what it may be.

"burned" looking effect on leaves
Only affecting 2 of the varieties we planted so far - very odd!
Different varieties were obviously more resistant

However, the affected potatoes actually had very nice clean new potatoes underground. Which we thoroughly enjoyed that evening. So nice to have our first reward after all the effort.

  1. Hi Diggybob, I read your post last night and decided to wait until now to reply after I had checked a few of my Potato plants today, (which were showing similar characteristics to yours) Although Potatoes can suffer from many diseases (and I'm no expert) I was putting the problem with mine down to excess rain/waterlogging and lack of sunlight over the past few months. I checked 2 plants today. The first was infested with earwigs (ants give the same symptoms) underneath the plant, the 2nd was rotting off around the stem at soil level with only 2 small potatoes (undamaged) on the roots. Hope this helps.
